Whilst I lecture in business and human resources theories there is nothing like solving a real-life problem.

A subject expert (theory and practice)

My career has spanned

  • setting up employment rights and HR services
  • HR leadership for large organisations 4,000+ staff
  • Talent management audit for a international research organisation (based in Germany)
  • advising start ups on structuring internal HR
  • coaching HR Managers in 'tricky' situations
  • drafting clear HR policies
  • disciplinary and grievance investigations.
  • senior exits
  • Pay and reward across the labour market and senior pay benchmarking
  • Collective bargaining and union relationship building.
  • Lecturing in general human resources and people strategy for competitive advantage.

I'd like to tell you a story of well-respected senior manager stealing from his employer and a board being divided on whether or not to do anything about it. It's an interesting story but, of course, between me and the board and the sacked manager. Not all 'people challenges' are as severe as that, some are a matter of strategy, but they are all important for the organisation's effectiveness.

I've advised on

  • how a senior manager should investigate after allegations of discrimination at work
  • whether a constantly complaining member of staff can be disciplined
  • how to create a pay, appraisal and talent management system for a FinTech start up
  • whether to start a redundancy, then managed a team of HR Managers putting over 100 people at risk of redundancy
  • whatever you are thinking of, I've advised on it and solved it. It isn't always easy but moving towards a solution helps feel better about it.

'People will be people.' and I've advised on the business implications of that and I could write the book.  But, there are thousands of books on Human Resources written by people who seem not to know what really happens. Perhaps I will write that book. But in the meantime ...

I like solving the real problems, small and large. If you've got a people issue then get in touch.  It can't do any harm talking about it.
